PUBLIC ACCOUNTS
Welcome to the Republic of the Marshall Islands Public Accounts Committee! The Public Accounts Committee is a standing committee appointed by the Speaker and approved by the Nitijela to examine the accounts, showing the appropriation of the sums granted by Parliament to meet the public expenditure. It plays the role of watchdog over public expenditures through careful inspection and analysis of the reports by the Republic of the Marshall Islands Auditor General. Consideration by the Committee involves gathering relevant facts so that the committee may draw conclusions and make recommendations in a constructive spirit.
While good governance is primarily a responsibility of the Executive arm of Government, exacting accountability from the Government remains a primary responsibility of the Legislature. Your elected senators control the public funding through approval of budget estimates at the beginning of each fiscal year and through scrutiny of the public accounts at the end of the cycle. The Public Accounts Committee is concerned with the end of this public financial management cycle. It ensures accountability by examining reports, recommending appropriate actions by the Government where necessary and by calling responsible Government officials to testify at its Public Hearings, a forum for the general public to address the Committee.
The aim of the Public Accounts Committee's webpage is to facilitate the exchange of information and opinion relating to Public Accounts to approve the quality and performance, to communicate with the individuals and organizations knowledgeable about matters of concern to public accountability and, finally, to provide an information service to the elected members of Parliament, the media, the general public and, most importantly, to the Marshallese people. Your feedback is of the utmost importance and greatly valued in this process. Thank you.
Senator Fred Muller
Chairman, Public Accounts Committee
